I hope you'll forgive me a moment of self-indulgence when I tell you that I was tickled pink by the way our Thanksgiving table turned out.
I'm the kind of person who believes that the delight is in the details, so a great button or beautiful stitching on a skirt makes me weak in the knees, and styling my Thanksgiving table with antique sheet music, book page pumpkins, and burlap makes the meal taste better, at least to me.
I blame my mother.
She's one of those make something out of nothing, homemade chocolate chip cookies waiting for their kids when they get home from school, every holiday is a perfectly baked and styled production type mothers. And as incapable as I will surely always be to add up to her, I still want my holiday tables to feel as lovely and warm and inviting as she always made ours feel. Even if I am half the cook she is. ;-)
I'm kind of in love with how it turned out this year.
99% of the credit goes to Mr. and his superior construction skills. He crafted me a brand new farmhouse table for the event, and guys, it's one of those giant, solid affairs that could survive an earthquake, and seat 14 people without breaking a sweat. Remember how I tried to build a table a couple years ago? Yeah, that didn't go so well. I learned my lesson. If your husband is an engineer and he designs airplanes for a living, there's a fair chance that the dining table he builds you is going to be pretty structurally sound.
For my part, I adorned his masterpiece in book page pumpkins (the perfect Thanksgiving day project for me and the littles), white berry garland, a burlap table runner, and candles. We ate on my eclectic collection of colored plates set on sheet music for place mats, wiped our faces with homemade muslin napkins stamped with the words "give thanks" and drank sparking cider out of mason jars.
A great juxtaposition makes me happy, and eating a formal meal among so many different organic textures made for a perfectly delightful table.
in other words...
I'll take mis-matched plates and mason jars over pristine crystal goblets and fine china any day.
ps. Have you been craving one of my skirts??
I've got great news for you. It's cyber Monday and we are having a sale!
